5 Storage Tips for Madison Metro Renters

Practical Storage Tips

Whether you're storing for the first time or you've rented a unit before, a few habits make the difference between a storage unit that works for you and one that turns into a disorganized mess you dread opening. These tips are specific to what actually matters for renters across Cambridge, De Forest, Sun Prairie, and Stoughton.

1. Plan Around Wisconsin's Freeze Thaw Cycle

Wisconsin winters aren't just cold, they cycle between freezing and thawing repeatedly, and that repeated stress is what actually damages stored belongings, not the cold alone. Wood furniture cracks at the joints, electronics develop internal condensation, and documents curl and stick together in the humidity swings that come with each thaw.

If you're storing anything in this category for more than a few months over the winter, temperature controlled storage at our De Forest location is worth the extra monthly cost. For everything else, tools, patio furniture, totes, standard storage at any of our four locations handles Wisconsin weather fine.

2. Size Your Unit for What You're Actually Storing, Not What You Might Store Someday

The most common sizing mistake is renting bigger than needed out of caution. A little extra room feels safe, but it also means paying for square footage you're not using every single month. Take a real inventory, or at least a rough count of major items, furniture pieces, box counts, before choosing a size. Our storage unit size guide walks through this by room and item type if you want a more precise estimate.

If your situation is genuinely uncertain, a smaller unit with the option to move up in size later is usually cheaper over time than renting large from the start on the assumption you might need it.

3. Leave a Walking Path, Don't Pack Wall to Wall

It's tempting to use every inch of a unit, but packing floor to ceiling and wall to wall makes retrieving anything a production. Leave a center aisle if the unit is deep enough, and place items you'll need more often near the front. This matters most for renters storing seasonal items, seasonal storage renters especially, since you'll be back in the unit multiple times a year swapping items in and out.

4. Use Plastic Totes for Anything Long Term

Cardboard holds up fine for a quick move, but for anything sitting in storage more than a few months, plastic totes with sealed lids protect against moisture and pests far better. This matters more in Wisconsin than in a drier climate, since humidity swings between seasons are exactly what causes cardboard to weaken and mildew to develop inside.

5. Know Which Locations Offer What Before You Commit

Not every Lakestone location offers the same amenities. De Forest is currently our only location with temperature controlled storage. Sun Prairie is currently the only location with dedicated contractor warehouse space. Every location offers drive up standard units, and RV, boat, and vehicle parking is available across the portfolio. If your storage need is specific, an oversized business inventory, a boat that needs winter protection, temperature sensitive antiques, check which location actually fits before assuming any Lakestone facility offers the same thing.
